Hi Advanced II students! How is everyone today? In our book today we’re going to talk about blogs and wikis, so I wanted to try to make a blog for our class. Now, I’m not very good at writing….I prefer to talk
, but we’re going to give this a try! Please help me out! I’m sure that you are all more creative than I am, so help me, help me, help me!!!
Today we’re going to talk about cell phones in class. Should they be allowed?
One of the problems with cell phones is that they can be a major distraction. There’s nothing worse than someone’s cell phone ringing in the middle of something important. And if the people actually start talking, it’s even worse. This is why many teachers are trying to ban cell phones from school. They say they disrupt their classrooms and break their students’ concentration. Worse, if they ring during a test, they can really hurt someone’s grade.
But lots of people disagree. They say kids need cell phones. Some kids have to keep in touch with parents and work. Rather than banning cell phones, some say that school officials should just make kids use them responsibly.
What do you think? Should cell phones be allowed in class? Could we use them in the classroom to help teach English better? Watch this video and tell me what you think….
Great topic for discussion, Lisa! I look forward to reading what your studwbrs have to say here.
ReplyDeletePersonally, as a teacher, I would actively encourage integration of cellphones in the classroom, since they're so much a part of life outside it!
Students can show each other photis of friends, family, pets, work colleagues etc and practice authentic language talking about them in pairs.
They also double as recorders of audio and video, dictionary, encyclopedia, writing tool, notepad, ebook and so much more!
I agree! I went to a great workshop at the last BrazTesol in Brasilia - got some great ideas for using the cell phones in class & even in the last week have had some great success!!
DeleteThis post hasn't actually been given to my students yet... It's for this week's class....just posted a little early in order to take advantage for our class :)
Hi, Lisa. Great post. Indeed, the whole issue of celphones in the classroom is not a simple one. Sure, if there are ways to integrate celphones as a tool in whatever the classroom work/activity is, that is a great thing. Like Graeme said, they are such a growing part of life, especially for teenagers. However, even if celphones are being used as a learning tool in the classroom, that is no guarantee that all students will be using them that way in the classroom. I mean, we have all had the students who try to make it look like they are doing class work, but are in fact texting with friends during class about stuff completely unrelated to the class. I think there is no solution to that problem, unless celphone use unrelated to class activities is banned from the classroom.
ReplyDeletehi teacher, how are you ? I think nowadays is so hard to banish cell phones in class, but is necessary. Unless we use this tool to contribute as knowledge in class. because today we live in a century that teens do everything in the same time, for example, they send messages while they listen what the teacher explaining something important on the board. However its clear who they dont absorb one hundred per cent of teacher's speech and always has a student, include me, who makes the same question EVERY time " can you repeat please?". i can imagine what pass in your mind, Lisa when you realize which the person wasn't paying attention in your class and you must to repeat again - "i wanna kill you sweet heart !! " LOL. Therefore, I know that the mobile can help us all the time, such as, gps , researching a word in english, call someone when you are alone, camera, etc... But sometimes we need overcome this addiction.

Hey, teacher! I believe that most of the teenagers can't control their addiction to the cell phone. We need some help, not only from our parents but also from our teachers , in a educative way, of course. I don't agree with the fact that students can use the cell phone in class, that is time for everything in our lives, but finding a way to interact technology (cell phones, in this case) and learning would be a great idea, especially because the student knows the product.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, the video scared me LOL, don't do that teacher, please!
Rebeca Matos
I agree with Rebeca, because we need control ourselves when we are in class. That's what I said in my text.

What about how we used phones in class this week?
ReplyDeleteWell, it was such an amazing and funny work. We could use our devices in a productive way, but we had your permission. Since we have it, no troble.
Deletephones, like every creation of man,was made to facilitate human needs, the use of these in class, enjoyed properly, can assist with the quick development and student interaction with modern technology. For example, our last class we could record our videos practicing pronunciation easier and much more dynamicac.
ReplyDeleteThe problem starts when students end up enjoying in an unproductive way of their cell phones, diverting from the focus of class for unrelated subjects, such as text messages or phone calls.

I agree with Lucas but im my opinion cellphones should be prohibited because people can not control themselves-André
DeleteHi, teacher. Kind of late :3 Well, about using cellphones in class, it's really complicated to put inside teenager's head that they have to be patient, because the desire of repling a messenge is really strong, partly because most of them think that it's a simple thing and it won't be a big problem, well, it is such a big problem since you know it's not allowed. Warning them is not working nowadays, that's why teachers and principals should give students the fair punition for using this devices. Of course we can use the best things cellphones offer us, but now in class. ~Saymon de César
